Automotive Heating and Cooling Repair - Houston

Automotive Heating and Cooling

Vehicle heating and cooling system problems are among the most frequent reasons for roadside breakdowns, especially for drivers in the Houston TX area. Maintaining a safe operating temperature within the engine is a tough job, with the intense heat produced by the combustion process to contend with, let alone the heat of summer's sweltering temperatures. Keeping the heating and cooling system in good repair is among the most important of maintenance tasks, crucial to life of the engine.

The engine produces an immense amount of heat as it operates, as fuel, air, and spark combine in the combustion chambers to produce the small, controlled explosions that move the pistons, producing the power that propels your vehicle along as you drive. The cooling system is designed to remove much of this heat, circulating a flow of cooling liquid through the engine to absorb heat from the metal surfaces inside, preventing the engine from destroying itself as it runs. Once it has passed through the engine, the coolant travels through the system to the radiator, where it winds its way through the cooling fins to disperse the heat it has carried away from the engine, assisted by air flowing in through the grille of the vehicle and the cooling fan. Once it has emerged from the radiator, the coolant is ready to begin the cycle again, traveling back to the engine to gather more heat.

As long as this cycle continues uninterrupted, the cooling system does an incredibly efficient job of keeping the engine safe from overheating. However, a clog or leak in the system can cause a problem quite quickly. If the flow of coolant through the system is even partially obstructed, engine overheating is often the result. An overheated engine is certainly a hassle, forcing you off to the side of the road in a cloud of steam, waiting for the tow truck to come, but worse yet, overheating can cause serious engine damage. Vital engine parts can warp from excessive heat, and gaskets can be blown.

Regular cooling and heating system maintenance is much less expensive and time consuming than engine repair. To avoid engine overheating, the heating and cooling system should be drained and flushed once a year to prevent corrosion. Debris in the system from interior corrosion is a frequent cause of radiator clogs and leaks. The water pump should also be checked regularly to be sure it is circulating the coolant efficiently. Bringing your vehicle in to a qualified technician for heating and cooling system service before the beginning of another hot Houston summer is very likely the most important visit to the repair shop to be made all year.
